We were saddened to hear about the passing of one of our board members, Vincent Conkey. He was our construction guru, taking on the planning of our new construction and meeting with council members and other city officials to bring our dream to fruition. He always made our board meetings eventful with his quick wit and honest opinions. He will be greatly missed.

Thank you so much to all of the following organizations:
In December, we received many items for the children.
St. Helen's in Newbury named our children and their families on their Giving Tree.
St. Stephen's Parish gave boots, hats, and gloves to our champions.
St. Albert the Great Girl Scout Troop made cookies for the holidays.
St. Christopher Parish had items for the HOC from paper goods to cleaning supplies as part of their Giving Tree Project.
Metro Catholic teachers organized a Christmas party for the children, bringing gifts and they made a special dinner.
Volunteers from Akron University and Cathedral Latin Notre Dame High School assist with homework and activities with the children.
We have a donor who gave us the funds to buy Dairy Queen cakes served after dinner for each child's birthday.
St. Angela Merici Parish, on their Service Day, sent a couple and their children to bring dinner and assist with homework.
St. Angela Merici confirmandi are fulfilling their service hours.

Eleanor Reagan, science teacher from Urban Community School, explained how the House of Champions received the solar panels.
"When we received an award from the CVEEC (Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center) and the Cavs for our conservation efforts I wanted to use the money for something visible and related to saving energy. Through contacting a series of people I met Myles Murray of AAT Solar. He had this great idea of teaching the kids about solar energy while a real installation was taking place. The partnership was born. Myles and his colleagues discussed the idea for Urban and discovered that while installing solar on the school would be too expensive at this time, installing panels on the House of Champions was doable and easier for students to see. Myles and his crew came to the middle schoolers and presented a few lessons on solar and electricity in general. Students went over to see the installation and interact with Myles and to ask questions. They also had a lot of questions about the H of C.
So there is an educational dimension to this project and it gives us a start on going solar."

Amanda Bracher was hired as the Activityies Director at The House of Champions! She is in her 4th year of teaching second grade at Metro Catholic School. She is originally from Cincinnati and graduated from the University of Dayton in 2010 with her bachelors degree and 2012 with her masters degree. She had been volunteering at the HOC every Monday, then started as the Activities Director In January. She is there four days a week for an hour each day. She plans different activities including: crafts, baking projects, games and sports. Some of the recent projects have been decorating Valentine's Day cookies, playing bingo, making paper airplanes and building a snowman. She is looking forward to the rest of the school year getting to know the children while learning from them!

For those of you who have seen the property, you might remember a blue house right behind the House of Champions. The house was very run down, and it was abandoned. Now it has been removed, which gives the students more room to play.
